Organization
National Alliance on Mental Illness-Southern Arizona (NAMI-SA) was founded in 1983 by family members seeking to obtain and improve services for their loved ones living with mental illness. Based in Tucson, Arizona, NAMI-SA was the fourth affiliate formed in the U.S. and is now one of 1,200 affiliates nationwide. While NAMI-SA has its own Board of Directors and bylaws, NAMI National charters the organization.
The mission of NAMI-SA is to improve the quality of life for all those affected by mental illness. NAMI-SA programs and initiatives include evidence-based education, support for individuals and families, and advocacy. The agency budget for FY 2019-2020 is $670,000 ($380,000 restricted), with 4 full time employees, 14 part time employees and 60 key volunteers.

Job Description
Reporting to a Board of Directors, the Executive Director of NAMI-SA has overall strategic and operational responsibility for executing NAMI-SA’s mission and vision through meeting annual goals and objectives; securing and managing finances; and overseeing programs and staff.

Ideal Qualifications
The Executive Director will be thoroughly committed to NAMI-SA’s mission and have proven leadership, supervisory, and relationship building/management experience. Concrete demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:
  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 5 years of senior management experience in a nonprofit setting.
  • Track record of effectively leading staff and collaborating with a board of directors.
  • Strong fundraising experience, including donor relations (individuals, foundations, and funding agencies); planned giving and direct mail; grant writing; and community events, including NAMIWalks.
  • Solid understanding of marketing and public relations principles and effective in engaging and collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders of diverse cultures.
  • Possesses strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excels in organizational management.
  • Proficient in current technology/software programs, including donor management systems.
  • Experience with social media.
  • Lived experience with mental illness, either personally or with a family member/friend.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Vision
  • Conveys the NAMI-SA vision to staff, board, volunteers, donors, and the greater community.
  • Works with board and staff to achieve the mission through strategic planning, fund development, and community outreach and marketing.
  • Translates the organization’s strategic plan into realistic goals and objectives in concert with staff.
  • Sets and models the organization’s culture, values, and behavior.
  • Oversees marketing and communications, including social media and online content, to build a stronger NAMI-SA brand.
  • Coordinates with the Board President in conducting and planning for Board meetings, including the agenda and program, preparation of materials and involvement on Board subcommittees.
  • Communicates effectively with the Board in a timely and accurate manner, providing all information necessary for informed decision making.
Fund Development and Finances
  • Responsible for overall fiscal responsibility and sustainability of the organization.
  • With the Board, creates and implements a development plan that will fund expansion, ensures the long-term health of the organization, and identifies new resources and support.
  • Directly cultivates donor relationships and requests donations.
  • With Finance Committee, prepares and presents to the Board an annual budget and financial statements, with accompanying analysis.
  • Assures maintenance of appropriate compensation and benefits policies and practices.
  • Works with the accountant to develop, maintain, and oversee sound fiscal practices including proper internal controls, payroll, and reports to funders and donors.
  • Supports a periodic audit by an independent auditor and reports results to Board. Reports to Board on status of audit remediation recommendation(s).
  • Maintains and demonstrates a high level of personal and professional integrity and ethics.
Operations
  • Implements Board policy decisions related to operations and programming.
  • Hires and retains highly competent, qualified staff through sound job descriptions, cross training, and annual performance evaluations.
  • Signs all contract agreements, notes and other legal instruments on behalf of the organization.
  • Ensures the work of the organization is supported by clear and effective processes and measurable objectives.
  • Oversees delivery and promotion of high-quality services and program evaluation.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field of mental health.
  • Supports the Board in its advocacy role by coordinating with NAMI National and other Arizona NAMI affiliates.
  • Takes necessary steps to maintain the office physical plant (property, buildings, insurance, etc.).
  • Ensures that employees have the necessary hardware, software, and communications tools necessary to perform their job responsibilities.
  • Establishes sound working relationships and collaborative agreements with community groups, businesses, and organizations.
Position
This is a full-time, exempt salaried position based in Tucson, Arizona. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday, normal business hours with occasional evening and weekend events. Some travel is required.
